REFLECTIONS

Canon Jeremy Davies, Precentor (Saturday 1st March 2008)

Holy Week and Easter are celebrated this year almost as early as they can be. We were into Lent just two days after Candlemas brought the Christmas season to an end. The juxtaposition of the two seasons helps us to hold the mysterious doctrines of Incarnation and Redemption together. And our Lenten experiment, with a series of reflections on Creation, Incarnation, Redemption and Living the Gospel, has enabled us to see doctrines we nod at in the Creed as part of a coherent whole which may become resourceful in our lives. The Sunday-by-Sunday reflection includes meeting together over a simple lunch and discussion related to the morning's sermon. This pilgrimage through Lent is aimed partly at those who are preparing for baptism and confirmation, but also at those of us who wish to deepen our awareness of God's love in our lives, and of how our lives can more effectively reflect that deepening awareness. We will be helped in all this – as Lent ends and Holy Week begins – by two distinguished theologians and spiritual writers: Jane Shaw, who is Chaplain of New College Oxford and our Canon Theologian, and Canon Melvyn Matthews, who was Chancellor of Wells Cathedral and is a well-known author on spiritual themes. Jane will lead most of our Holy Week with reflections from the Monday through to Easter Sunday, and Melvyn will conduct the hour-and-a-half Devotion on Good Friday. And lest you should think that our Holy Week commemoration has been reduced to words merely, one of the highlights of this year's observance will be the Cathedral choir's performance on the evening of Good Friday of one of the most sublime musical works in the repertoire – Bach's St John Passion. There is much to look forward to, and drink from, as we travel through the remainder of Lent and engage with the powerful drama of Holy Week and Easter.
