WILTSHIRE’S JUBILEE CELEBRATION SERVICE IN SALISBURY CATHEDRAL FRIDAY 1 JUNE AT 6.00PM

Issued Monday 28th May 2012

Wiltshire’s Celebration Service to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee takes place in Salisbury Cathedral on Friday 1 June at 6.00pm.

The Dean of Salisbury, the Very Revd June Osborne, said “This is going to be a really beautiful service and marvellous celebration to honour Her Majesty the Queen as we mark her Diamond Jubilee year. We will offer particular thanksgiving for her reign and sixty years of faithful, inspirational and exemplary service. The Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sarah Troughton, and I extend a warm welcome to everyone in Wiltshire to join us here in the Cathedral for what will be a truly joyous occasion.”

The cathedral choir will sing music sung at the Coronation on 2 June 1953 and new music from the ‘Choirbook for the Queen’, the special compilation of church anthems which has been created in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. The Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt Reverend Nicholas Holtam, preaches and Sarah Troughton and the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Lady Laura Phillips, read the lessons.

The plaque commemorating Her Majesty and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Salisbury on 1 May as part of their Jubilee tour will be dedicated, and sixty candles will be lit from the Jubilee candle.
Everyone who would like to attend the Celebration Service at 6.00pm is asked to arrive by 5.45pm.

Earlier in the afternoon, at 4.30pm, one of the boy choristers who sang at the Coronation in Westminster Abbey will offer his personal recollections of the occasion which was his ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. In ‘Vivat Regina – a Coronation Chorister remembers’ Malcolm Tegg also includes musical illustrations and will have a fascinating collection of some of the many associated items of memorabilia which were collected at the time. This talk takes place in the Trinity Chapel and all are welcome.

The Bishop of Salisbury has commissioned a special thank-you to Her Majesty the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee. The 'BIG Thank You Card', has been available for parishioners in the diocese to sign online since the Queen’s visit to Salisbury and Sherborne (Tuesday 1 May). This weekend is the final opportunity to sign the card and worshippers are encouraged to do so either online or by signing the paper forms which will be available at services throughout the Diamond Jubilee weekend.

Find out about our Jubilee themed fun activities for children and their families 1-10 June. Come to the Cathedral during the half term break and enjoy drop-in craft workshops, story time and a special trail looking for crowns all around the Cathedral.

Take part in the Big Jubilee Weekend, Saturday 2 - Sunday 3 June, organised by the Salisbury Churches Community Action Group, a sub group of Churches Together. This special weekend is an opportunity for Salisbury churches to put their faith into action practically and be united in serving the needy with Big Saturday, Big Night Out and Big Lunch.
