Sponsor a Chair for the Cathedral - A Progress Report - June 2004

The old chairs are removed from the Cathedral. They have all been disposed of to churches, groups and individuals. Donations given for the old chairs have been passed to the Friends for the Chair Project.
Packing up the old chairs
The removal of the chairs was an opportunity for the caretakers to give the Cathedral floor a thorough clean, revealing the beautiful stones.

The new Howe 40/4 chairs arrived in the cloisters on 14 July 2003. Forty chairs can be stacked in a pile 4 feet high and are easier to move and set out for the vergers and caretakers.

The appeal started in April 2003. Since then over 750 chairs have been fully sponsored by members of the Friends, individuals and groups connected with the Cathedral, and other generous donors.

Many have been given in memory of a family member, or a friend.
Arranging the new chairs

Chairs have now been installed in the main nave, the Trinity Chapel, Presbytery, South Transept and part of the North Transept. Over 700 of these have been fully sponsored; the balance have been paid for by the Friends.

This appeal has not closed and the Friends would welcome more sponsors. Another 400 individual sponsorships would enable us to buy the remaining chairs. Can you help?
